Jin Kichi – Japanese Restaurant

I’ve been going to Jin Kichi for a number of years so its only fitting that I write up a review about it. Jin Kichi is an Izakaya type place. They have a really good selection of traditional Japanese dishes, yakimono and sushi. Its a robatayaki style izakaya (japanese pub), where patrons sit round the central grill.

Personally, whilst the sushi is ok here, I don’t go there to eat that, I go to eat everything else. There are certain dishes, which if you want to eat, then you better go early or tell them on the phone to keep it aside for you e.g grilled chicken skin, grilled yellow tail jaw and fried crispy pink shrimps.

Unfortunately my pictures are not great in this review. I forgot the SLR and so used my phone… but hopefully it’ll give you an idea… so apologies for that.

So what’s good…

I had the grilled pork and shiso rolls. Out of all the yakimono that Jin Kichi do, these are the best. The pork is nice and crispy and the shiso lifts it nicely.

On top we ordered the set of yakitori which had various skewers of chicken with onion, chicken livers, chicken gizzards and chicken wings. All of these were really good. I’d never had gizzards before, however I liked the texture – chewy. The chicken livers were really soft… better than Bincho in this case. The whole set was nice, in terms of the texture and variety you got. We also got a skewer of quails eggs and shitake too.

Ohitashi is my favourite, simple dish to eat at most good japanese places. This one is served up with huge shavings of bonito flakes.. just the way I like it.

We ordered the grilled salmon jaw. This was nice, soft and fatty. Personally I prefer the yellow tail jaw as its more indulgent and interesting.

What else I love to eat there on other visits

  • Oroshi with Ikura
  • Maguro Natto
  • Chicken Skin skewers
  • Fried crispy pink shrimps
  • Yellow Tail Jaw

Service can vary however on the whole I’ve found it to be polite, good and efficient.

My mate lives nearby so its a good thing for me. I love jin Kichi… one of my favourites. In the yakitori stakes… its almost on par with Bincho.

If you are planning to go.. then best to book in advance…

Jin Kichi is at 73 Heath Street, Hampstead, NW3 6UG. Tel No: (020) 7794 6158.
